The Venice authorities have introduced a mandatory fee for visiting the city from 04/25/2024. The fee also applies to those tourists who visit the city on cruises.
On the eve of the visit, tourists must independently pay a fee of 5 Euro per adult (free for children under 14 years old) on the website https://cda.ve.it/en/ using a bank card and receive a QR code for each person.
The fine for missing a code during a random check can range from 50 to 300 Euro.
If a tourist is exempt from paying the fee (for example, a child or a passenger arriving at the terminal only to board the ship), then a free QR code must still be issued.
For tourists who purchased a shore excursion through MSC Cruises (in case of a call in Venice), the cruise company itself will arrange and pay these fees, but 5 Euro will be billed to the tourist's onboard account in addition to payment.
The test period for levying the tax will last from April 25 to July 14, and a decision will be made later on whether to introduce the tax on a permanent basis.
