Frequently asked questions
We recommend flying in the day before the cruise begins.
- Arrive at the port 2–3 hours before departure.
- When booking an airport–port transfer, allow at least 5 hours between landing and the scheduled sailing.
An expedition sails on a small vessel and includes zodiac landings: walks on the Antarctic Peninsula, penguin colonies, research stations and lectures from the expedition team. A scenic cruise is operated by a large ship and passes through Antarctic waters without landings. The second format is more comfortable and markedly cheaper.
Only from November to March, the southern summer, when the ice retreats and vessels can reach the Antarctic Peninsula. Outside that window expeditions do not operate. Cruises along South America run in the same season.
Roughly €6,000 to €12,000 per person for 10 to 20 days. Premium expeditions start at €15,000 and luxury formats at €20,000. By comparison, a conventional South American cruise of 7 to 14 nights costs €900 to €2,500. The flight to Buenos Aires or Santiago is additional.
No. Argentina and Chile, the main countries of departure for these itineraries, require no visa from Ukrainian citizens. Antarctica has no nationality and no visa regime.
It is the stretch of ocean between South America and Antarctica, among the roughest in the world. The crossing takes about two days each way. Sea conditions are unpredictable, from almost calm to heavy motion. Carry seasickness remedies and begin taking them before entering the passage.
Antarctic expeditions leave mainly from Ushuaia in southern Argentina. South American cruises depart from Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Valparaíso and Santiago. Ushuaia is reached by domestic flight, so pre-cruise nights are essential.
Along South America: MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises. Antarctic expeditions with landings are run by Ponant, Silversea Cruises and Scenic. Scenic Antarctic voyages without landings are offered by MSC, Holland America Line and Celebrity.
Layered clothing, a windproof and waterproof jacket, hat and gloves, waterproof footwear. Many operators supply part of the kit, most often a parka; confirm the contents with the specific line. Extended medical insurance is strongly advised and is mandatory with a number of companies.
Still have a question?
We'll help you choose a cruise and answer your questions.
Two products sit under one filter here, and they share almost nothing except a season. A cruise along the coast of South America means seven to fourteen nights on a conventional ship, Rio and Buenos Aires, the Chilean fjords and Cape Horn. An Antarctic expedition means ten to twenty days on an expedition vessel, zodiac landings, penguin colonies and a price several times higher. The first is bought as a journey, the second as an event that happens once in a lifetime. Both run in a short window: November to March, the southern summer.
Two products under one name
South America. A regular, niche but predictable market. Itineraries run along the coasts of Brazil, Argentina and Chile, enter Patagonia and pass the Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn. The ships are conventional cruise vessels; service and fares are comparable to Mediterranean sailings, only the logistics cost more.
Antarctica. An ultra-niche product limited by season, vessel type and budget. This is not a cruise holiday but an expedition: a scientific team on board, lectures, and constant work with the weather. Emotional value counts for more here than the grade of the cabin.
Both draw the same audience — travellers who have already done Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. The decisions differ, though. South America is chosen to see the continent from the water. Antarctica is chosen to see Antarctica, and everything else is secondary.
South America: routes and ports
A typical itinerary runs 7 to 14 nights. Departure ports are Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Valparaíso and Santiago. MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises all operate here — familiar mass-market and premium.
| Route | Key ports | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| The Brazilian coast | Rio de Janeiro, Ilhabela, Ilha Grande, Balneário Camboriú | Warm sea, short crossings, beach calls |
| Río de la Plata and Patagonia | Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Puerto Madryn, Falkland Islands | The classic arc turning south, sea lion colonies |
| Chilean fjords and Cape Horn | Valparaíso, Punta Arenas, Strait of Magellan | Glaciers and narrow channels. The most spectacular part of the continent |
Antarctica: landings, or passage without them
This is the second and decisive choice on the page. The two formats carry the same name and very different prices.
The difference is fundamental and worth settling before booking: on a scenic itinerary you will not set foot on Antarctic soil. The format is more comfortable and cheaper, but it is observation rather than presence. A first-timer for whom Antarctica is the goal, not an item on a list, should budget for the expedition.
| Format | What happens | Vessels and lines |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition with landings | Zodiac landings, walks on the Antarctic Peninsula, penguin colonies, research stations, lectures by the expedition team. 10–14 nights; extended voyages from 15 | Small expedition vessels: Ponant, Silversea Cruises, Scenic |
| Scenic Antarctica | Passage through Antarctic waters with no landings. Icebergs, glaciers and coastline seen from the deck. Priced as a cruise, not an expedition | Large ships: MSC Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises |
The Drake Passage
Between South America and Antarctica lies a stretch of ocean regarded as one of the roughest in the world. The crossing takes about two days each way and is repeated on the return. Conditions range from an almost calm sea to substantial motion, and they cannot be predicted in advance.
One practical conclusion follows: anyone prone to seasickness should carry remedies and begin taking them before entering the passage, not after. Expedition vessels are smaller than cruise ships and move noticeably more.
Season, prices and why you plan a year ahead
Both South America and Antarctica operate from November to March. This is the southern summer: Antarctica has polar daylight, the ice retreats and vessels can reach the peninsula. Outside that window expeditions do not run at all.
A short season and a limited number of expedition vessels have an obvious consequence: dates sell far ahead. Planning a year in advance for an Antarctic expedition is normal. The price gap is not operator greed: an expedition ship carries few passengers, maintains a science team, zodiacs and equipment, works a short window and operates where there is no infrastructure. Add the flight, which is expensive in its own right.
| Product | Length | Price per person | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| South America coastal cruise | 7–14 nights | €900 to €2,500 | November–March |
| Antarctic expedition (standard) | 10–14 nights | €6,000 to €12,000 | November–March |
| Extended expedition (South Georgia, Falklands) | from 15 nights | from €15,000; luxury from €20,000 | November–March |
Logistics, visas and what to pack
Visas. Ukrainian citizens require no visa for Argentina or Chile. This is a rare case of a long-haul destination that does not run through a consulate.
Flights. The main airports are Buenos Aires and Santiago. Antarctic expeditions depart from Ushuaia, reached by domestic flight. Allow pre-cruise nights: the chain of flights is long, and missing an expedition departure cannot be recovered.
Kit. A conventional South American cruise needs nothing special. For Antarctica: layered clothing, a windproof and waterproof jacket, hat and gloves, waterproof footwear. Many operators supply part of the kit, usually a parka, but this varies by company. Extended medical insurance is strongly advised and some lines require it.
Summary
South America and Antarctica are for travellers seeking discovery rather than a holiday. The region demands more time, more preparation and more money, and returns the glaciers of Patagonia and the shores of Antarctica, the last great frontier on the cruise map. The season is short, the vessels are few, and the choice of format — expedition or scenic passage — defines the whole trip. Plan well ahead.
