Before you sail

We recommend flying in the day before the cruise begins.

  • Arrive at the port 2–3 hours before departure.
  • When booking an airport–port transfer, allow at least 5 hours between landing and the scheduled sailing.

Frequently asked questions

Cruise Center lists 2,247 cruises calling at Greece or departing from Greek ports — the largest catalogue in the niche. Prices start from €452 for 7 nights on Norwegian Pearl. All itineraries refresh in real time through a direct API integration with MSC, Costa, NCL, Royal Caribbean, Celestyal and other lines.

The optimal season is May–June and September–October: air temperatures of 21–28 °C, warm sea, average prices and minimal tourist crowds. In July and August Santorini and Mykonos receive 3–4 ships per day and the funicular queue in Fira can reach 2 hours. Winter (November–March) is low season with few cruises available.

The classic set for a first cruise: Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu and Heraklion (Crete). For authentic Greece away from the crowds — Patmos, Paros, Hydra, Symi, Delos, Monemvasia, Nafplio and Kythira. These islands are accessible only to small ships and yachts run by Celestyal, Variety, Silversea, Seabourn and Windstar.

Yes, but this is a niche format. Pure Greek cruises are offered by Celestyal Cruises on 4–7 night itineraries out of Piraeus and Variety Cruises on 7–14 night yachting routes. The majority of mass-market cruises by MSC, Costa, NCL and Royal Caribbean call at Greece as part of a wider Mediterranean itinerary alongside Italy, Croatia or Türkiye.

The starting price for a 7-night cruise calling at Greece is €452 per person, double occupancy, inside cabin (Norwegian Pearl). The mass-market average is €600–€1,000. A balcony cabin typically adds €200–€400. MSC Yacht Club premium runs from €3,549 for 9 nights. Full all-inclusive on Celestyal starts at €700 for 4 nights.

The main departure ports for cruises calling at Greece are Venice, Civitavecchia (Rome), Bari, Trieste and Barcelona. For dedicated all-Greece itineraries the key departure ports are Piraeus (Athens) and Lavrio in Greece itself, plus Istanbul in Türkiye. Many routes are offered as round-trips returning to the same departure port.

Ukrainian nationals need a Schengen C visa (Greece is part of Schengen and the EU). EU nationals including Polish travellers do not need a visa. Israeli nationals receive 90-day visa-free entry. For itineraries calling at Türkiye (Istanbul, Kuşadası), Ukrainian and Polish nationals get 90-day visa-free entry, and Israeli nationals also enter visa-free.

For a first cruise covering the headline islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes), the mass-market lines work best: MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines. They offer strong family facilities, multilingual service and accessible pricing. For a deeper immersion calling at smaller islands, look at Celestyal Cruises (the Greek specialist) or the niche luxury lines Variety, Silversea or Seabourn.

Cruise Center lists 2,247 cruises calling at Greece or departing from Greek ports — from 7-night Mediterranean voyages aboard Norwegian Pearl from €452 to expedition-style sailings through 5–7 Aegean islands aboard the small yachts of Variety Cruises. The key decision for the traveller is which format suits the trip: a Mediterranean itinerary that calls at Greece (mass-market lines MSC, Costa, NCL, Royal Caribbean) or an all-Greece cruise out of Piraeus (Athens) or Lavrio (Celestyal Cruises, Variety, niche luxury lines). A 7-night cruise covers 5–7 islands — the same trip by ferry with hotel stays would take 14+ days and cost 1.5–2 times more.

Greece in a cruise: an open-air museum spread across 6,000 islands

Greece consists of roughly 6,000 islands, of which around 227 are inhabited and only 78 have a population above 100 residents. This numerical contrast defines the uniqueness of a Greek cruise: five distinct archipelagos within a single country, each with its own character, architecture and natural setting.

Mainland Greece appears in cruise itineraries through the ports of Piraeus (Athens), Katakolon (gateway to Ancient Olympia), Volos (access to the Meteora monasteries) and Thessaloniki in the north. Island Greece comprises five major archipelagos: the Cyclades (central Aegean), the Dodecanese (eastern Aegean near Türkiye), the Ionian Islands (western Greece), the Saronic Islands (close to Athens) and the Northern Aegean Islands and Sporades. Every cruise itinerary picks a combination of islands depending on its length and departure port.

What a cruise specifically delivers in Greece: short island-to-island distances of 50 to 150 nautical miles (5–10 hours of sailing), stable summer weather with minimal storms, a single country with no internal Schengen borders, and a safe, easy-going style of tourism. The maths: a 7-night cruise covers 5–7 islands inclusive of accommodation, dining and transfers between ports; the same trip by ferry with hotels would take 12–14 days and cost €1,800–€2,500 against €600–€1,000 for the cruise.

Seven main cruise ports in Greece

Greek itineraries on Cruise Center call at dozens of ports, but seven take 90 % of the traffic. The table below lists their archipelago and the key sights available within a port stop.

PortArchipelagoWhat to see during the call
Piraeus (Athens)Attica, mainlandthe Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, Plaka district

Piraeus (Athens) — the main Greek cruise port

Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Greece and one of the busiest in the Mediterranean. Cruise Center lists «Piraeus (Athens)» in 515 sailings, either departing or calling. The key distinction: MSC, Royal Caribbean and NCL use Piraeus as an 8–10 hour port of call, whereas Celestyal Cruises and Variety Cruises use it as a departure port for all-Greece itineraries. The distance from the cruise terminal to the Acropolis is 12 km, about 25 minutes by taxi or metro.

Santorini — the postcard island of Greece

The signature visual of Greece: white houses on black caldera cliffs, blue church domes, sunsets at Oia. Ships anchor in the caldera and passengers transfer by tender into Skala port, then climb to Fira either by funicular or via 588 steps on the back of donkeys. On peak summer days in July and August the caldera holds 3–4 cruise ships at once and the funicular queue stretches to two hours. The expert recommendation: book Santorini for May–June or September instead.

Rhodes — UNESCO Old Town and Lindos

One of Europe's most complete medieval cities. Cruise ships dock in the commercial port of Rhodes, a 10-minute walk from the Old Town walls. A day's port stop covers the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Saint John, the Street of the Knights, the Suleiman Mosque, and an excursion to Lindos with its acropolis (50 km from the port). Best suited to high summer — Rhodes has the most stable weather in the Aegean.

Hidden gems of Greek cruising: islands away from the crowds

The key point of differentiation from standard itineraries. These eight islands are visited only by small ships under 1,000 passengers and the yachts of premium cruise lines. They do not appear on standard MSC, Costa, NCL or Royal Caribbean routes.

  • Patmos (Dodecanese) — the 11th-century Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, both part of the UNESCO heritage listing (1999). Visited by Celestyal Cruises, Silversea and Seabourn
  • Paros (Cyclades) — white villages Parikia and Naoussa, ancient marble quarries, calm beaches. Variety Cruises, Celestyal
  • Hydra (Saronic) — historic harbour 60 km from Athens, a total car ban across the island, transport only on donkeys. SeaDream, Windstar, Variety
  • Symi (Dodecanese) — neoclassical pastel houses, a picture-postcard harbour 41 km from Rhodes. SeaDream, Variety
  • Delos (Cyclades) — an uninhabited UNESCO heritage island (1990), an ancient religious centre 2 nautical miles from Mykonos. Day calls by Variety and Celestyal
  • Monemvasia (Laconia, Peloponnese) — Byzantine fortress town on a rock, known as the Gibraltar of Greece. Variety Cruises, Ponant
  • Nafplio (Argolis) — the first capital of independent Greece in 1827–1834, with the Palamidi fortress towering over the town. Variety, Celestyal, Windstar
  • Kythira (between the Aegean and Ionian seas) — the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite, with quiet beaches and no mass tourism. Variety, Seabourn

The expert recommendation from Cruise Center: for a general introduction to Greece choose MSC Cruises», Costa Cruises or Norwegian Cruise Lines. If the hidden gems are the priority, go with Silversea, Seabourn, Windstar, SeaDream, Variety, Celestyal or Ponant.

Aegean, Ionian and Cycladic islands: where to sail

Greek waters split into five archipelago groups. Understanding their differences makes it easier to pick an itinerary by purpose — sightseeing, beaches, nightlife or authenticity.

The Cyclades — the most touristic archipelago

About 220 islands in the central Aegean, of which 24 are inhabited. The architecture is cubic white houses with blue shutters. Top islands: Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Antiparos, Kea. Every cruise line from MSC to Variety calls here. Season: May to October. The best windows are May, early June and September, when crowds are at their lowest.

The Dodecanese — eastern Aegean by Türkiye

A group of 12 large and about 150 small islands along the Turkish coast. Top: Rhodes, Kos, Patmos, Symi, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Leros. Architecture blends Byzantine, Ottoman and Italian layers (1912–1947 under Italian administration). Celestyal Cruises itineraries frequently link the Dodecanese to Turkish Kuşadası and Istanbul.

The Ionian Islands — green islands of the west

Seven major islands along the western Greek coast: Corfu, Cephalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxos, Kythira. A softer Venetian influence in architecture (Corfu was Venetian for 400 years). Warm sea, abundant greenery, minimal arid landscapes. Cruises out of Venice, Bari and Trieste call here most often.

The Saronic Islands — day trips from Athens

Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Agistri — the islands closest to Athens. Day cruises from Piraeus aboard ships of up to 800 passengers visit 3 islands in a single day. A separate budget product for post-Athens itineraries, available daily April through October, from €90 per person.

Northern Aegean and Sporades — for experienced travellers

Less touristic destinations: Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Lemnos, Ikaria, Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos. Better suited to expedition and yachting itineraries focused on nature, traditional villages and secluded beaches. Rarely included in standard large-ship schedules.

When to sail a Greek cruise

The most practical question for any traveller. Greece is a destination with a strongly pronounced July–August peak and ideal shoulder-season windows.

MonthAir temperaturePricesTouristsAssessment
April16–20 °Cbelow averageminimalgood, cool for swimming
May20–25 °Cbelow averagemoderateideal

August28–34 °Cmaximumpeakavoid
September25–28 °Caveragemoderateideal
October21–26 °Cbelow averageminimalideal, late summer
November–March12–18 °Cminimumminimallow season, few cruises

In July and August Santorini receives 3–4 cruise ships per day; the funicular queue in Fira can reach two hours and tables at Oia restaurants need to be booked two weeks ahead. The pattern repeats on Mykonos and inside the Rhodes Old Town. The expert recommendation from Cruise Center: the best window for a Greek cruise is May–June or September–October — fewest crowds, fine weather, reasonable prices.

Cruise lines sailing Greece: mass-market and niche

The principal decision point for travellers. The comparison table below covers the eleven cruise lines available on the platform for Greece.

LineSegmentRoute typeFrom 7 nights
MSC Cruisesmass-marketMediterranean itinerary calling at Greecefrom €599
Costa Cruisesmass-marketMediterranean itinerary calling at Greece and Croatiafrom €609
Norwegian Cruise Linesmass-marketAdriatic and Greece, Eastern Mediterraneanfrom €452
Royal Caribbeanmass-market / premiumEastern Mediterranean, Greece as part of the routefrom €947
Celestyal Cruisespremium, GreekGreece only or Greece and Türkiye, 4–7 nightsfrom €700
Variety Cruisesluxury yachtingSmall yachts, Greece only, 7–14 nightsfrom €2,500
Silversea Cruisesultra-luxuryGreece, Türkiye, Cyprus, all-inclusivefrom €4,500
Seabournultra-luxuryGreece and neighbouring countries, small shipsfrom €4,200
Windstar Cruisespremium, sail-assistedGreece, sail-assisted ships of 150–300 passengersfrom €3,000
SeaDream Yacht Clubluxury yachtingGreece and French Riviera, yachts of 56 cabinsfrom €4,800
Ponantluxury, FrenchSmall ships, Greece and neighbours, expedition elementsfrom €4,000

The principle: mass-market lines (MSC, Costa, NCL, Royal Caribbean) offer cruises calling at 2–3 Greek ports inside a longer Mediterranean itinerary. Niche premium lines run Greece-only or Greece-plus-Türkiye routes with 5–10 ports per itinerary, sometimes with two stops in a single day. For a first introduction try «Costa Cruises» or «MSC Yacht Club»; for deeper immersion choose Celestyal or Variety.

  • Norwegian Gem, 7 nights, Adriatic-Greece, Venice → Trieste → Kotor → Corfu → Split → Venice — from €615
  • MSC Fantasia, 9 nights, Piraeus → Izmir → Istanbul → Corfu → Bari → Trieste → Katakolon → Piraeus — from €669
  • Costa Fortuna, 7 nights, Istanbul → Izmir → Mykonos → Santorini → Volos → Istanbul — from €939
  • Explorer of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), 7 nights from Venice calling at Santorini and Bari — from €947

  • MSC Yacht Club Fantasia, 9 nights, premium segment with the same ports as Fantasia — from €3,549

A balcony cabin typically adds €200–€400 over the inside fare. An MSC Yacht Club suite is on average three times the base cabin price. All prices are verified through direct API integration with the cruise lines on the publication date; actual rates may vary with current promotions and availability.

Cruise calling at Greece versus cruise only in Greece

Cruises calling at Greece — about 85 % of platform traffic

Large Mediterranean itineraries departing from Venice, Bari, Civitavecchia, Barcelona or Istanbul, calling at 2–3 Greek ports (typically Corfu plus Katakolon or Santorini plus Mykonos). Operated by MSC, Costa, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Starting prices from €452. Port stops 6–10 hours. Well suited to a first Mediterranean cruise: travellers see several countries and the headline Greek islands in one trip.

Greece-only cruises — about 15 %

Routes by Celestyal Cruises, Variety Cruises and the niche luxury lines, 4–14 nights through 5–14 Greek islands. The signature feature: occasionally two ports in a single day. Celestyal Crystal's 4-night route, for example, runs Monday Lavrio (start) plus Mykonos; Tuesday Kuşadası (Türkiye) plus Patmos; Wednesday Rhodes; Thursday Heraklion (Crete) plus Santorini; Friday back to Lavrio. From €700 for 4 nights. Best suited to a second or third Greek cruise, once the headline islands are familiar.

The yachting alternative — Variety Cruises 7-night route: Kea → Delos → Santorini → Rethymno (Crete) → Kythira → Monemvasia → Nafplio → Piraeus. From €2,500 for 7 nights. The ship carries at most 70 passengers — no crowds and no formality of large ships.

Cabin selection and what to pack for a Greek cruise

Cabin

  • Inside cabin — the budget option, no natural light. Suits 4–7 night cruises and travellers spending minimal time on board
  • Outside / oceanview — natural light, fixed window. Works well on short Greek itineraries
  • Balcony — the most popular choice for Greece: sunrise over the Santorini caldera or sunset off Corfu from a private balcony
  • Suite or MSC Yacht Club — premium service, dedicated zones, personal butler, priority disembarkation

What to pack

  • Sturdy footwear for climbing acropoleis: Lindos on Rhodes (270 steps), Athens Acropolis, Paleokastritsa on Corfu
  • Light jacket or shawl for evenings — even in summer Aegean winds are cool, and on deck after 22:00 it is noticeably colder than on shore
  • Sunscreen SPF 50 or higher — Greek summer sun is intense and sunburn is possible within 30 minutes
  • Mask and snorkel — small-cove port stops often include beaches with clear water and underwater features
  • European Type C/F adaptor — MSC and Royal Caribbean often fit American sockets inside cabins
  • Smart attire for formal nights on MSC, Costa and NCL: a long dress for women, a suit or dark trousers and shirt for men

Pre- and post-cruise programmes in Athens and on the islands

Experienced cruisers commonly add 1–2 nights in Athens before the cruise and 2–3 nights after on one of the islands. This turns ports of call from 6–10 hour highlights into proper visits.

  • Athens before the cruise: 2 nights in Plaka or Syntagma. Day one — Acropolis and Acropolis Museum. Day two — Ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum, plus a food tour through the tavernas of Psyrri
  • Santorini after the cruise: the ship typically calls for 6–8 hours, so a proper visit needs 2 more nights in Oia or Imerovigli. Programme — sunset in Oia overlooking the caldera, Assyrtiko wine tastings at Venetsanos or Santo wineries, hikes along the caldera rim
  • Mykonos after the cruise: 1–2 nights for a beach programme and nightlife. Top beaches — Paraportiani, Platis Gialos, Psarou. Nightlife — Little Venice and the streets of Hora
  • Rhodes after the cruise: 2 nights for the Lindos plus Valley of the Butterflies plus Seven Springs circuit. Rhodes has the most stable summer climate in the Aegean

Hotel bookings are on the traveller's side via any platform. On request the specialists at Cruise Center can suggest recommended neighbourhoods, categories and airport-to-port transfers.

  • Polish and other EU nationals: no visa required, valid passport only
  • Israeli nationals: visa-free entry to Greece and the Schengen Area for 90 days
  • For itineraries calling at Türkiye (Istanbul, Kuşadası, Izmir): Ukrainian and Polish nationals — visa-free 90 days; Israeli nationals — also visa-free entry
