COSTA TOSCANA - ship of the 2022 year
13 Dec 2021

On December 2, 2021, at the Mayer   shipyard  in Turku, Finland ,  Costa Cruises took delivery of the latest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered  ship  Costa Toscana, the most advanced technology in the maritime sector to reduce emissions.

The Costa Group , which includes the brands Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises, was  the first in the world to use liquefied natural gas on cruise ships . Their LNG-powered liners, including the AIDAnova and Costa Smeralda liners, which are already in service; Costa Toscana received today; and AIDACosma coming soon.

LNG  represents a breakthrough in improving the environmental performance of cruise ships both at sea and during port calls. Its use makes it possible to almost completely eliminate sulfur oxide emissions (zero emissions) and particulate matter (95-100% reduction), as well as significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (85% direct reduction) and CO2 (up to 20% reduction).

“ Costa Toscana  is reinforcing our commitment to sustainable innovation by further contributing to the use of LNG on cruise ships, a technology we pioneered. It is an innovation that is part of an ever-evolving journey of environmental transformation. What's more, we are also working in testing further innovations such as fuel cells and batteries with the aim of eventually creating the first net zero emission cruise ship,”   said  Mario Zanetti, President of Costa Cruises. « At the same time, thanks to its excellent and innovative features and services,  Costa Toscana  will be able to attract new cruise guests supporting us in strengthening our presence in the Mediterranean and our gradual relaunch plan.”

The first Costa Toscana cruise  will depart Savona, Italy  on March 5, 2022  with a week-long itinerary that will take you to Marseille, Barcelona, Valencia, Palermo and Civitavecchia/Rome. After its debut, the new flagship will continue to operate in the Western Mediterranean for a year. During the summer season it will call at Savona, Civitavecchia/Rome, Naples, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille and during the autumn season Palma de Mallorca will replace Ibiza.

Costa Toscana is a real " smart city " for travel. In addition to running on LNG, the liner is equipped with a number of cutting-edge technological innovations designed to further reduce its environmental impact. The entire daily  water requirement is  met by converting sea water using desalination plants. Energy consumption is kept to a minimum thanks to  an intelligent  energy efficiency system . In addition, the ship will carry out  100%  separate waste collection and recycling  of materials such as plastic, paper, glass and aluminum, as part of an integrated approach aimed at implementing projects in the sphere of the circular economy.

The driftwood used to decorate the islands of the new Archipelago restaurant was collected thanks to " Guardians of the Coast ", an environmental education program to protect the Italian coastline promoted by the  Costa Crociere Foundation . For every dinner served at the Archipelago, Costa Cruises will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Costa Cruises Foundation to support environmental and social projects.

The new Costa flagship is a tribute to Tuscany, the result of an extraordinary creative project led by  Adam D. Tihany to enhance and bring to life in one place the best of this wonderful Italian region that gave the ship its name, its decks and its main public spaces.

Furniture, lighting, fabrics and accessories are  all made in Italy  and designed exclusively for Costa Toscana by 15 partners who exemplify Italian craftsmanship. The offer on board fits perfectly into this unusual context: from the Solemio Spa to the entertainment areas; from themed bars in collaboration with major Italian and international brands to 21 restaurants and an area dedicated to the "gastronomic experience".

Comfortable and elegant, over 2600 cabins also perfectly reflect Italian style and taste. The terrace over the sea cabin category is a magnificent outbuilding where guests can enjoy breakfast, an aperitif or just enjoy the view.
