Before you sail

We recommend flying in the day before the cruise begins.

  • Arrive at the port 2–3 hours before departure.
  • When booking an airport–port transfer, allow at least 5 hours between landing and the scheduled sailing.

Frequently asked questions

More than 6,500 Caribbean itineraries (snapshot of 9 July 2026 — 6 487 sailings). They cover the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean, departures from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral, and island-based itineraries that avoid US ports altogether.

December to April: dry weather, calm seas, every line sailing. August to October is hurricane season — cruises are not cancelled, but the route may change in real time. The Southern Caribbean lies outside the main hurricane belt and its season is steadier.

For itineraries departing from Florida, yes: Ukrainian citizens need a B1/B2 visa, Polish citizens need ESTA. Cruises from Martinique, Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic require no US visa. Martinique and Guadeloupe are French overseas departments within the Schengen area, so Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport need no visa for them.

After. At the application stage the consulate asks for a travel plan, not a paid booking. Paying for an itinerary before the visa is issued is unnecessary and risky: processing times cannot be planned around.

Roughly from €500 per person, double occupancy, in an inside cabin at the budget end, to €2,500 and above on a new mega-ship in peak season. The price depends on the line, the cabin grade, the season and the age of the vessel.

With the mass-market lines (Royal Caribbean, MSC, NCL) the base fare covers the cabin, full board, on-board entertainment, pools and the gym. It does not cover drinks, shore excursions, the spa, speciality restaurants, gratuities or port charges. With luxury lines such as Seabourn and Explora Journeys much of this is included.

Eastern (Bahamas, St Thomas, St Maarten, Puerto Rico): short crossings, many calls, the private islands. Western (Cozumel, Costa Maya, Jamaica, Cayman): Mayan ruins, diving, nature, longer crossings. Southern (Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Barbados, St Lucia): further from Florida and outside the main hurricane belt.

A private territory visited only by that line's ships. Royal Caribbean has Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas; MSC has Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a marine reserve on the site of former sand extraction. The beaches, restaurants and facilities belong to the line, and no other ship calls that day.

Still have a question?

We'll help you choose a cruise and answer your questions.

New ships almost always begin their careers here. Icon of the Seas, the Oasis class, the latest MSC hulls — each spends two or three seasons in the Caribbean before moving to Europe. That is why this region, with more than 6,500 itineraries on the Center Cruises platform, remains the most technologically advanced in the world's cruise calendar. Yet reducing the Caribbean to mega-ships is a mistake: five distinct products live under one name, and working out which of them is yours matters more than picking a vessel.

Five Caribbeans in one region

Mega-ships. The largest and newest vessels afloat: Icon of the Seas and the Oasis class at Royal Caribbean. On board entertainment is part of the itinerary here. There may be more sea days than port calls, and that is a deliberate choice.

The classic beach cruise. Seven to fourteen nights, an island every other day. The most popular format. Family and first-time cruising: the Caribbean is the typical entry point, with warm water and children's facilities on board and ashore. Port Canaveral near Orlando adds theme parks to the trip.

Luxury. Seabourn and Explora Journeys: small ships, long port calls, genuine all-inclusive fares — unlike the mass-market, where the base fare covers meals but not drinks or excursions. Finally, expedition and premium itineraries in the Southern Caribbean, the least touristed part of the region.

Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean

The first decision is not which line, but which of the three arcs. Length, price and visa requirements all follow from it.

Sub-regionKey portsWhat it offers
Eastern CaribbeanBahamas, St Thomas, St Maarten, Puerto RicoShort crossings, many calls, the private islands of the cruise lines
Western CaribbeanCozumel, Costa Maya, Jamaica, Cayman IslandsMayan ruins, diving, waterfalls. Longer crossings and more sea days
Southern CaribbeanAruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Barbados, St LuciaOutside the main hurricane belt. Premium and expedition itineraries

Private islands, and why new ships debut here

A private island is a cruise line's own territory, visited only by its own ships. Royal Caribbean has Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas; MSC has Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a marine reserve created on the site of former sand extraction. A call there resembles a resort day rather than an excursion: the beaches and restaurants belong to the line, and no other ships are present.

Infrastructure on that scale exists only in the Caribbean, which explains the order in which the lines deploy new vessels. The ports take giant hulls and demand runs year-round. After two or three seasons a ship moves to the Mediterranean, where it is no longer the newest. Anyone who wants to sail a brand-new ship comes to the Caribbean.

Cruise lines of the Caribbean

Departure ports. Miami is the principal one. Fort Lauderdale is the world's largest cruise port by departure volume. Port Canaveral near Orlando is chosen by travellers adding theme parks to the cruise.

LineSegmentWhat sets it apart
Royal Caribbean InternationalMass-market and premiumRegional leader. Newest and largest ships, the CocoCay private island, a strong children's programme
MSC CruisesMass-marketNew vessels, its own island Ocean Cay, generally lower fares at a comparable standard
Norwegian Cruise LineMass-market+Freestyle Cruising: no fixed dinner times or dress code. Many unconventional itineraries
Seabourn, Explora JourneysLuxurySmall ships, long port calls, genuine all-inclusive

When to sail, and what hurricane season means

Hurricane season runs from August to October. The lines do not cancel sailings during it; they reroute in real time, substituting one port for another, shortening or shifting a call, steering around the storm. A cruise ship outruns any hurricane, and safety comes from manoeuvring rather than cancellation. But the itinerary you bought may not look like the brochure.

Hence the rule: August to October is for travellers who want the cruise itself rather than a specific list of islands. A trip built around one particular port belongs to December–April.

The US visa, and the Caribbean without it

Most Caribbean itineraries begin in Florida and therefore require a US visa: B1/B2 for Ukrainian citizens, ESTA for Polish citizens. The visa factor does not block demand, it redistributes it — some travellers move to itineraries that avoid US ports.

Those itineraries exist. Cruises from Martinique, Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic reach the same islands without a US visa: Martinique and Guadeloupe are French overseas departments, and therefore Schengen, so Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport need no visa for them.

And a sequence that saves money. Buy the cruise after the visa is granted, not before. At the application stage the consulate asks for a travel plan, not a paid booking.

Three recurring mistakes

Underestimating the flight. Florida from Eastern Europe means a connection and almost a full day in transit, plus a time-zone shift. A day to adjust before embarkation pays for itself.

Ignoring the visa: without it the Florida cruise does not happen, and processing times do not bend to your schedule. And third, choosing hurricane season for the price: the saving is real, but so is the chance the route changes.

Summary

The Caribbean is the world's largest and most technologically advanced cruise region: the biggest ships and the private islands are concentrated here. But it is a long-haul destination with a pronounced season and visa requirements. Such a trip is never spontaneous: the visa first, then the season, and only then the ship.
