Before you sail

We recommend flying in the day before the cruise begins.

  • Arrive at the port 2–3 hours before departure.
  • When booking an airport–port transfer, allow at least 5 hours between landing and the scheduled sailing.

Frequently asked questions

Cruise Center lists 240 cruises departing from Istanbul. The starting price is €939 for 7 nights on Costa Fortuna with calls at Izmir, Mykonos, Santorini and Volos. The MSC Yacht Club Fantasia premium segment costs from €4,009 for 9 nights. All itineraries refresh through a direct API integration with the cruise lines.

The main destinations are the Eastern Mediterranean (Kuşadası, Izmir, Rhodes, Kos, Santorini, Mykonos), the Greek Islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete), the Adriatic and Italy (Corfu, Bari, Trieste, Venice), repositioning sailings into the Black Sea, Israel (Haifa) and Egypt (Alexandria). Typical itineraries last 7–10 nights.

The main cruise port is Galataport in the Karaköy district on the European side, opened in 2021. It hosts all large ships from MSC, Costa, NCL and MSC Yacht Club. Galataport sits 1 km from Taksim and 50 km from Istanbul IST airport, a 1-hour taxi ride. Alternative terminals: Sarayburnu in Eminönü for luxury yachts and Kadıköy on the Asian side.

The peak season is May–September: maximum routes, all lines, higher prices. The low season is November–March: limited choice, mainly MSC and Costa, but prices 30–40 % below summer. April and October are shoulder months — comfortable weather and average prices, the best price-to-quality balance.

Ukrainian, Polish, Moldovan, Romanian, Hungarian and Israeli nationals do not need a visa for Türkiye — visa-free entry for 90 days. For most cruises calling at Greek ports Ukrainian nationals need a Schengen C visa; EU nationals including Poles do not. Passport validity must be at least 6 months on the date of entry.

There are no direct flights from Kyiv in 2026. Alternatives — connecting flights via Chișinău (FlyOne), Bucharest (Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines) or Warsaw (LOT). By bus from Odesa — 24 hours via Chișinău (Metro Turizm, Truva Tourism), from Lviv — 30 hours via Bulgaria. By car from Lviv — 1,800 km, 24–28 hours with two overnight stops.

The starting price for a 7-night cruise from Istanbul is €939 per person, double occupancy, inside cabin (Costa Fortuna). A balcony cabin typically costs €200–€400 more. 9-night MSC Fantasia routes start from €1,189. The MSC Yacht Club Fantasia premium segment runs from €4,009 for 9 nights with premium service.

These are two distinct products. A Bosphorus cruise is a 1.5–3 hour sightseeing trip on a local boat along the European and Asian shores of Istanbul, priced at €15–€50. A multi-day cruise from Istanbul is 7–10 nights on an MSC, Costa or NCL ship with calls at 4–7 ports across the Eastern Mediterranean, priced from €939. Cruise Center lists the multi-day ocean cruises, not the Bosphorus tours.

Cruise Center lists 240 cruises departing from Istanbul — from 7-night Eastern Mediterranean voyages calling at Kuşadası and the Greek islands aboard Costa Fortuna from €939 to 9-night premium MSC Yacht Club Fantasia itineraries from €4,009. Istanbul is a strategic departure port for travellers from Poland, Moldova, Romania, Hungary and Israel: direct flights to many Eastern European capitals, visa-free entry into Türkiye for 90 days. For Ukrainian travellers in 2026 — connecting flights via Chișinău or Warsaw, or overland routes by bus and car from Odesa and Lviv.

Istanbul as a cruise port: the gateway to the Eastern Mediterranean

Istanbul holds a singular position on the Mediterranean cruise map — the only major port between the Black Sea and the Aegean, between Europe and Asia. The city sits at the meeting point of the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara, which makes it a natural exit point into the Aegean and onwards into the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

Compared with alternative Eastern Mediterranean departure ports — Venice, Civitavecchia or Barcelona — cruises from Istanbul offer shorter itineraries focused on Greece and Türkiye: less time at sea, more time in port. A typical 7–9 night itinerary covers 4–6 ports, including Kuşadası for access to Ephesus, Izmir, Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes.

An additional advantage of Istanbul as a starting point is the option to add 2–3 nights in the city itself. In that time it is realistic to see Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar on the European side and to ferry across the Bosphorus to the Asian district of Kadıköy. That turns a standard cruise into a full encounter with two continents.

Istanbul cruise terminals: Galataport, Sarayburnu and Kadıköy

Istanbul operates three cruise terminals with different specialisations. Understanding the difference matters for choosing a hotel and planning a transfer.

TerminalDistrictKey facts
GalataportKaraköy (European side)Opened in 2021, the main cruise terminal. Hosts all the large MSC, Costa, NCL and MSC Yacht Club ships. 1 km on foot to Taksim, 50 km and a 1-hour taxi ride to Istanbul IST airport. Coordinates: 41.0257°N, 28.9783°E
SarayburnuEminönü (historic centre)The old cruise port, used less today — primarily for luxury yachts and small Silversea and Seabourn ships. 500 m from Hagia Sophia and Topkapi. Coordinates: 41.0220°N, 28.9750°E
KadıköyKadıköy (Asian side)Handles short European itineraries and local ferries. Suited to passengers staying on the Asian side of the city. Coordinates: 40.9921°N, 29.0238°E

A logistical tip: the easiest transfer between Istanbul IST airport and Galataport is the M11 metro to Gayrettepe plus a short taxi (around €25). Sabiha Gökçen airport sits on the Asian side, 60 km from Galataport, and the drive can take 1.5–2 hours in rush hour — factor this in when booking connecting flights.

Cruise lines departing from Istanbul

Three segments of cruise lines work out of Istanbul — mass-market, premium and ultra-luxury. Each offers its own format and price band.

Mass-market: MSC, Costa, NCL, Celestyal

The bulk of Istanbul departures runs on «MSC Cruises» (ships MSC Fantasia and MSC Sinfonia), «Costa Cruises» (Costa Fortuna), «Norwegian Cruise Lines» (Norwegian Viva). Starting prices from €939. Greek Celestyal Cruises adds focused Istanbul-Greece routings, and Royal Caribbean runs seasonal Eastern Mediterranean itineraries.

Premium: MSC Yacht Club

«MSC Yacht Club» aboard MSC Yacht Club Fantasia delivers a ship-within-a-ship premium enclave with the private Top Sail Lounge, a dedicated restaurant and a personal butler. Prices from €3,549 for 9 nights. Ideal for travellers wanting a classic cruise format with premium service layered on top.

Ultra-luxury and boutique lines

The top segment is represented by Explora Journeys (MSC Group, boutique segment, launched 2023), Oceania Cruises (premium for food-focused travellers with longer itineraries), Four Seasons Yachts (debut 2026), Silversea Cruises (ultra-luxury all-inclusive) and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection (yachts for 298 guests). Starting prices in this segment run from €4,500 per week with fully inclusive service and exclusive ports of call.

When to sail an Istanbul cruise

Seasonality for Istanbul departures is sharply defined. May–September is the peak, shoulder months offer the best price/comfort balance, and winter delivers savings of up to 40 %.

PeriodWhat's availablePricesCrowds
May–September (peak)maximum routes, all lines, new ships in seasonaverage to highpeak in July–August
April and October (shoulder)most lines, comfortable weatheraveragemoderate
November–March (low season)limited choice, mainly MSC and Costaminimum — 30–40 % below summerminimum

For travellers with flexible dates and an interest in saving, winter cruises from Istanbul are worth considering — the same MSC and Costa routes through the Eastern Mediterranean at prices 30–40 % below summer. The downside is cold water (swimming is out from November through March); the upside is empty museum queues in Istanbul, uncrowded sights on the Greek islands and short waits at the cruise terminals.

How to get to Istanbul for a cruise

Istanbul sits conveniently for travellers from Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Direct flights connect many capitals, overland transport is available, and visa-free entry removes the Schengen barrier.

  • Direct flights are available from Warsaw and Kraków (LOT, Turkish Airlines), Budapest (Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air), Chișinău (Turkish Airlines, FlyOne), Bucharest (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus), Tel Aviv (Turkish Airlines, El Al), Almaty, Tbilisi, Yerevan
  • From Ukraine in 2026 there are no direct flights from Kyiv. Alternatives — connections through Chișinău (FlyOne, Air Moldova), Bucharest (Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines) or Warsaw (LOT)
  • Bus: daily services from Odesa (24 hours via Chișinău), Lviv (30 hours via Bulgaria), Chișinău (16 hours). Operators — Metro Turizm, Truva Tourism, Eurolines
  • By car from Lviv — about 1,800 km and 24–28 hours with two overnight stops. The route runs via Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria or via Moldova
  • Visa-free entry: Ukrainian, Polish, Moldovan, Romanian, Hungarian and Israeli passport holders enter Türkiye visa-free for 90 days with a valid passport
  • Airports: Istanbul IST (new, European side, 50 km to Galataport) and Sabiha Gökçen SAW (Asian side, 60 km to Galataport). Most EU and Moldovan flights arrive at IST

Istanbul before and after the cruise: 2–3 nights in the city

The specialists at Cruise Center recommend arriving in Istanbul early, at least 1–2 nights and ideally 2–3. This reduces the risk of missing the ship due to flight delays and gives time to explore the city. Three neighbourhoods suit a stay, each with its own logic.

Sultanahmet — the historic centre

Suited to first-time visitors who want the main sights next to the hotel. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar all sit within a 20-minute walk. The downsides are tourist noise and a restaurant scene weighted toward tourist formats. Galataport is about 4 km away, 15 minutes by taxi.

Beyoğlu and Taksim — modern Istanbul

Suited to repeat visitors or to anyone combining the cruise with nightlife, shopping and dining. Istiklal Avenue, Taksim Square, the artistic Cihangir neighbourhood and Galata Tower anchor the area. A strong dining scene, third-wave coffee shops and bars. Galataport is about 1.5 km away, a 20-minute walk down through Karaköy.

Karaköy and Kumkapı — close to the port

The best choice for early embarkation or anyone wanting a compact location. Karaköy is the fashionable district right beside Galataport with a short walk to the Grand Bazaar across the Galata Bridge. Kumkapı offers fish restaurants and affordable hotels. Galataport is 200–500 metres away on foot.

Hotel bookings stay on the traveller's side via any platform. On request the Cruise Center specialists can put together a tailored package combining hotel, cruise and airport-port transfer. There are no group packages in the catalogue.

Documents and visa for an Istanbul cruise

A fundamental fork in documentation: Türkiye is not in Schengen, entry is visa-free, but most itineraries include Greek ports where Schengen is required.

  • Visa-free entry to Türkiye: Ukrainian, Polish, Moldovan, Romanian, Hungarian and Israeli nationals — 90 days for tourism on a valid passport
  • Passport validity — at least 6 months on the date of entry into Türkiye
  • Schengen C visa — mandatory for routes calling at Greece, Italy (Corfu, Bari, Trieste, Venice, Civitavecchia) and other Schengen states. EU nationals including Poles do not need Schengen
  • Cyprus (Limassol) is not in Schengen but visa-free for Ukrainian, Polish and Israeli nationals for 90 days
  • Travel medical insurance with €30,000 coverage — mandatory for Schengen, recommended for Türkiye
  • Documents for online check-in: passport, cruise booking, return ticket, insurance

Paperwork should be sorted in advance. Online check-in on the cruise line's website 3–5 days before departure is mandatory — without it boarding is refused.
