Italy Cruises 2026–2027 — page 93

Italy is not one destination but three. The Western Mediterranean with Genoa, Rome and Naples; the Adriatic with Venice, Bari and Trieste; and the Italian islands — Sicily and Sardinia. Choosing an itinerary starts with the region and only then narrows to a port and a date.

Three Italies: where the choice begins

The simplest way to explain the choice is by region: each has its own geography, its own set of ports and its own logic of travel.

Departure ports and what sets them apart

Italy’s main advantage over other starting points is the variety of ports. Each answers a different need.

A port is not always the sight itself

This is the most useful practical knowledge for planning a day. Not every Italian port sits beside the major attractions: often the port is the starting point for an excursion rather than the destination itself. Livorno is the classic case: the town is interesting, but most travellers head from there to Florence or Pisa.

The practical conclusion is simple: if the aim is a particular city, build the travel time into the day in advance. La Spezia has one further quirk: the port itself is fine, but flying there is inconvenient.

Lines and the Italian atmosphere on board

Italian itineraries are served by MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Explora Journeys.

On MSC and Costa the atmosphere on board is noticeably more Italian than on other lines: late dinners, expressive entertainment, many Italian guests and a galley leaning towards Mediterranean cooking. It is neither better nor worse — simply a different holiday style, and worth weighing when choosing.

Italy or Barcelona as a starting point

Barcelona is a very convenient port: the airport is close, flights are plentiful and the city is beautiful. Italy answers differently — with the variety of ports and itineraries. From here you can set off into the Western Mediterranean, into the Adriatic or towards the islands, choosing the embarkation point to suit your programme. The second advantage is how easily the cruise turns into a full journey: a few days in Rome, Venice, Florence or on the Amalfi Coast make the holiday markedly richer.

Season and prices

The main season runs from April to November, though some itineraries from Genoa and Civitavecchia operate year-round. Guides for 7 nights:

The lowest fare in the category at the snapshot date starts from €69, but that is for short programmes rather than week-long ones: the ranges above apply to 7 nights. The final price depends on the line, the date, the cabin grade and what is included.

A cruise plus a week in Italy

There is real demand for this pairing, and it is also the most sensible way to build the trip. Most often people take two or three days in Venice, Rome or Naples and then the cruise; the reverse works too, leaving the city for afterwards. The ideal shape is to combine the cruise with a few days in Italy before or after: the country is far too rich to be seen only from the port.

Logistics and visas

Visas. Ukrainian citizens do not need a Schengen visa: visa-free travel applies with a biometric passport, 90 days within any 180. Medical insurance with cover from €30,000 is mandatory. Polish citizens need no visa as EU citizens. If the itinerary leaves the Schengen area — with calls in Turkey, for instance — entry conditions should be checked against the specific programme.

The airport follows the departure port. Naples has one practically in the city, close to the harbour; Civitavecchia is served by Rome Fiumicino; Genoa and the Adriatic ports have their own hubs. La Spezia is the least convenient in this respect. Plan a night in the departure city before the cruise in any variant.

Conclusion

Italy is one of the best countries in Europe from which to begin a sea cruise: the wide choice of ports and itineraries lets you assemble the trip around yourself.

Choose the itinerary by region — the Western Mediterranean, the Adriatic or the Italian islands. And the ideal shape of the journey is to combine the cruise with a few days in Italy before or after it.
