River cruises from Bordeaux, Cruise ship: S.S. São Gabriel

The ship ties up in the historic centre of the town, often within walking distance of the sights, whereas an ocean liner arrives at a port. There are 100 to 200 passengers rather than several thousand, there is no motion at sea, and the programme is built around daily excursions. An ocean cruise offers more on board and suits families with children better.

The category holds 6 217 sailings (snapshot of 9 July 2026). The itineraries cover the Danube, Rhine, Main, Moselle, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Elbe and Po, and beyond Europe the Nile and the Mekong.

That is the great misconception. A river cruise is one of the most intensive touring formats there is: a new town practically every day, a berth in the centre, and a programme built around culture and food. It disappoints only those expecting the entertainment of an ocean liner.

With many lines: meals, drinks with meals, some alcohol, daily excursions, Wi-Fi and gratuities. Uniworld, Scenic and Emerald Cruises come closest to full all-inclusive, as do selected AmaWaterways fares. CroisiEurope often includes drinks and much of the service. A-ROSA offers fares without drinks and with drinks partially included.

The main season runs from April to October. A second window falls in late November and December, when the Christmas markets of Germany, Austria and France are open: the ship berths in the centre and there is no travelling between towns. New Year cruises on the Danube, Rhine and Seine are also popular.

Usually 100 to 200, rarely more than 250. That small complement is exactly what creates the intimate atmosphere the format is chosen for.

Short itineraries of four or five nights run from about €500–800 per person. Classic cruises of seven or eight nights from €900–2,000. Premium itineraries from €2,500–6,000 and above. Typical lengths are 5, 7, 11, 14 or 16 nights.

No. The itineraries run through the Schengen area, and Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport travel visa-free: 90 days within any 180-day period. Travel insurance with at least €30,000 of cover is required. For the Nile and the Mekong, entry conditions are checked separately.

Three waterways at once: the Garonne, the Dordogne and the Gironde estuary. The Garonne leads to Cadillac and Sauternes, the Dordogne to Libourne and Saint-Émilion, and the Gironde to the Médoc, Pauillac and Blaye. That is why itineraries from a single port differ so much.

The category lists more than 300 cruises (snapshot 06.08.2026 — 371), from short 4–5-night programmes to luxury. The lowest fare at the snapshot date starts from €897.

In most classic programmes, yes: Bordeaux is both the departure and the return port. The broad pattern is Bordeaux → the Médoc and Pauillac or Fort Médoc → Blaye → Bourg → Libourne and Saint-Émilion → Cadillac → Bordeaux, though the set of calls varies from programme to programme.

The most characteristic are CroisiEurope, Uniworld, Scenic and AmaWaterways. CroisiEurope is one of the mainstays, Uniworld offers the luxury Brilliant Bordeaux over 8 days, Scenic sails about 8 nights, and AmaWaterways runs wine itineraries along the Garonne and the Dordogne.

Not always automatically: it depends on the line and the particular excursion. Château visits and tastings are a key part of the route, but their presence in the base fare should be checked against the specific programme before booking.

Yes. The Gironde is tidal, so arrival times at ports may shift and individual calls may be substituted depending on berth availability. CroisiEurope warns of this directly; it is the standard mechanics of the destination.

Travellers with a genuine interest in French wine and châteaux: the route follows the appellations of the Médoc, Saint-Émilion and Sauternes. The Rhône is wine plus gastronomy and Provence; the Douro is port wine, vineyards and Portuguese landscapes. Without an interest in wine the cruise is still possible, but its main value registers more faintly.

The main airport is Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD); alternatively fly into Paris and take the TGV, about two hours to Bordeaux. From Chișinău the route runs via Istanbul, from Poland via Paris. Plan one or two nights in Bordeaux before the cruise.
