Frequently asked questions

The ship ties up in the historic centre of the town, often within walking distance of the sights, whereas an ocean liner arrives at a port. There are 100 to 200 passengers rather than several thousand, there is no motion at sea, and the programme is built around daily excursions. An ocean cruise offers more on board and suits families with children better.

The category holds 6 217 sailings (snapshot of 9 July 2026). The itineraries cover the Danube, Rhine, Main, Moselle, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Elbe and Po, and beyond Europe the Nile and the Mekong.

That is the great misconception. A river cruise is one of the most intensive touring formats there is: a new town practically every day, a berth in the centre, and a programme built around culture and food. It disappoints only those expecting the entertainment of an ocean liner.

With many lines: meals, drinks with meals, some alcohol, daily excursions, Wi-Fi and gratuities. Uniworld, Scenic and Emerald Cruises come closest to full all-inclusive, as do selected AmaWaterways fares. CroisiEurope often includes drinks and much of the service. A-ROSA offers fares without drinks and with drinks partially included.

The main season runs from April to October. A second window falls in late November and December, when the Christmas markets of Germany, Austria and France are open: the ship berths in the centre and there is no travelling between towns. New Year cruises on the Danube, Rhine and Seine are also popular.

Usually 100 to 200, rarely more than 250. That small complement is exactly what creates the intimate atmosphere the format is chosen for.

Short itineraries of four or five nights run from about €500–800 per person. Classic cruises of seven or eight nights from €900–2,000. Premium itineraries from €2,500–6,000 and above. Typical lengths are 5, 7, 11, 14 or 16 nights.

No. The itineraries run through the Schengen area, and Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport travel visa-free: 90 days within any 180-day period. Travel insurance with at least €30,000 of cover is required. For the Nile and the Mekong, entry conditions are checked separately.

The loop Paris — Les Andelys — Honfleur — Rouen — Paris, with Caudebec-en-Caux added on some programmes. The standard duration is eight days, seven nights. An excursion to Monet’s gardens at Giverny features on most programmes.

The category lists more than 600 cruises (snapshot 06.08.2026 — 710), from short 3–5-night itineraries to premium and luxury programmes. The lowest fare at the snapshot date starts from €275.

CroisiEurope, Viking, Uniworld, A-ROSA, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Tauck, Avalon Waterways, Riviera Travel, VIVA Cruises and Amadeus River Cruises; from 2026 also the luxury brand VIVA Boutique. Ships are smaller than on the Danube: roughly 128 to 202 guests.

It depends on the line. CroisiEurope moors at Quai de Grenelle in the 15th arrondissement, near the Eiffel Tower. Viking and A-ROSA use Le Pecq, a western suburb of Paris. Owing to clearance limits and a bridge repair in 2025–2026, some departures moved out of the centre — check the berth of your specific cruise before booking.

From spring to autumn. Monet’s house and gardens at Giverny are open from 1 April to 1 November, so spring and summer departures are in highest demand.

Ukrainian citizens do not need a Schengen visa: visa-free travel applies with a biometric passport, 90 days within any 180. Medical insurance with cover from €30,000 is mandatory. Polish citizens need no visa as EU citizens.

The airports are Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly. Ukraine’s airports are closed, so flights are routed through neighbouring countries, most often Moldova or Poland. Arriving at least a day before departure is recommended.

The Seine offers Paris and France in one journey: art, gastronomy, Normandy. The Danube offers more countries and capitals in the same week. The choice depends on the goal: the depth of one country or a collection of cities.

Still have a question?

We'll help you choose a cruise and answer your questions.

A Seine cruise begins where most journeys merely land: in Paris. The ship stays in the city for a day or two, sails into Normandy — Giverny, Rouen, Honfleur — and returns. There is no need to choose between the French capital and a river cruise: the itinerary brings both into a single trip without a single hotel change.

The classic route: Paris and Normandy

A standard Seine cruise lasts eight days — seven nights — and runs as a loop: Paris — Les Andelys — Honfleur — Rouen — Paris, with Caudebec-en-Caux added on some programmes. The ship sails at night, and each morning opens in a new Norman town.

PortWhat it offers
ParisStart and finish; the ship stays for a day or two, city time before and after the cruise
Les AndelysChalk cliffs above the Seine and Château Gaillard, the castle of Richard the Lionheart
RouenThe capital of Normandy: the cathedral of Monet’s canvases, a Gothic old town
HonfleurThe old harbour beloved by the Impressionists
GivernyMonet’s house and gardens (an excursion from the route); open 1 April to 1 November

Berths in Paris: by the Eiffel Tower or at Le Pecq

“Departure from Paris” means different things with different lines, and it is worth checking before booking. CroisiEurope moors at Quai de Grenelle in the 15th arrondissement, near the Eiffel Tower. Viking and A-ROSA use Le Pecq, a western suburb with a transfer still needed to reach the centre. The reason is not only marketing: clearance limits at Saint-Denis and a bridge repair in 2025–2026 forced some lines to move embarkation out of the centre. If stepping off the gangway straight into Paris matters to you, check the berth of your specific departure.

Cruise lines and formats

The Seine is served by CroisiEurope, Viking, Uniworld, A-ROSA, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Tauck, Avalon Waterways, Riviera Travel, VIVA Cruises and Amadeus River Cruises; in 2026 the luxury brand VIVA Boutique also operates on the river.

Ships here are smaller than on the Danube: Uniworld’s S.S. Joie de Vivre takes 128 guests, Viking Longships 168, A-ROSA VIVA up to 202. Accommodation, meals and the programme are usually included; drinks, excursions, Wi-Fi and gratuities vary by company. The fullest packages come from the luxury lines: Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld.

Normandy and the D-Day beaches

For most travellers the Seine means Paris, Monet and French gastronomy. Yet the route has a second motive: the history of the Second World War. Excursions to the Allied landing beaches — Omaha Beach and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer — feature on many programmes, and for some travellers they are the main reason to choose the Seine.

Season, duration and prices

The Seine season runs from spring to autumn, with one precise anchor: Monet’s house and gardens at Giverny are open from 1 April to 1 November, which makes spring and summer departures the most sought-after.

Route typeDurationPrice guide per person
Short itineraries3–5 nightsfrom €500–1,200
Classic cruise7 nightsfrom €1,300–2,000
Premium and luxury7+ nightsfrom €4,000–6,000

The lowest fare on the platform at the snapshot date starts from €275 for short itineraries; the table shows indicative segment ranges — the final price depends on the line, cabin and date.

Seine or Danube

These are different journeys, not rivals. The Seine is for those who want Paris and France in one trip: art, gastronomy, the Impressionists. The Danube is for those who want more countries and capitals in a week: Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava. A traveller dreaming of Paris will not find it on the Danube; one seeking a collection of capitals will get a single one on the Seine — but what a capital it is.

Logistics and visas

Visas. Ukrainian citizens do not need a Schengen visa: visa-free travel applies with a biometric passport, 90 days within any 180. Medical insurance with cover from €30,000 is mandatory. Polish citizens need no visa as EU citizens.

The airports are Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY). Ukraine’s airports are closed, so flights are routed through neighbouring countries — most often Moldova or Poland. Even when the ship stays in Paris for a day or two, we recommend arriving at least a day before departure: it removes the risk of missing the ship and adds a calm evening in the city.

Conclusion

A Seine cruise is Paris and Normandy in one journey: the capital at the start and finish, with Giverny, Rouen and Honfleur in between. It suits travellers who value culture, art and gastronomy — France here reveals itself not as a list of cities but as the depth of a single region.

The key advantage is the combination: there is no need to choose between a trip to Paris and a river cruise — the route delivers both.
