The Future of the Global Fleet: 84 New Cruise Ships to Enter the Market by 2039
This is a clear sign that the cruise industry continues to grow actively, which means:
• travellers can expect an even wider variety of holiday experiences, ranging from affordable cruises to ultra-luxury concepts such as the Yacht Club;
• cruise lines will introduce more unique and rarely visited itineraries around the world;
• additional capacity in the market will encourage cruise companies to offer attractive promotions to draw more passengers.
According to the latest update of the global cruise ship orderbook by Cruise Industry News, 84 new cruise ships are expected to join the worldwide fleet by 2039. The total value of the vessels currently under construction is estimated at $88.8 billion, bringing the average cost of each ship to more than $1 billion.
Eight vessels have already debuted this year, with five more scheduled for delivery by the end of the period, including the impressive MSC World Asia. The ship is being built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France and is set to become the largest new cruise ship debuting in 2026.
New Records and Orders from Leading Cruise Lines
The market’s rapid growth is being driven by new contracts signed by brands including Viking, Crystal, SeaDream, Four Seasons and United Waterways.
• Viking placed the largest order, confirming options for two additional luxury ships, each accommodating 988 guests.
• Crystal ordered a third sister ship to the 690-passenger Crystal Grace, with delivery scheduled for 2034.
• SeaDream announced the construction of its first newly built ship, the 230-guest SeaDream III, scheduled for completion in 2029.
• United Waterways ordered its first 186-passenger expedition vessel, which will operate under the management of Poseidon Expeditions.
• Four Seasons will add a third 190-passenger vessel to its fleet in 2031.
Disney Cruise Line has also revised its plans, bringing forward the delivery dates of two new ships.
American Cruise Lines updated its nine-ship order plan: American Grace and American Beauty are scheduled to debut in 2028, followed by American Rhapsody in 2029.
